I have not seen the "backwards" crank you speak of but My uncle and Dad had New Hoolland Model 78 square balers powered by V-4 Wiscosins. These baler had the PTO of the engine facing forwards. On the pulley on the PTO was about an 8 inch disc with a rolled edge that could be used to start the engine by hand if need which was most of the time as the 6 volt electrics would not reliable.
