Hi,
I sure do need the help of some good Briggs & Stratton old timers or pros who can help me determine the Model, Type and Code Number of my B&S engine. I am trying to rebuild it and everywhere I go for parts insists that I must have the Model, Type and Code Number of the engine before they can help me.

I picked up an old Walk Behind Tractor that has a tag on the machine (not the engine) identifying it as a Western Auto Supply, Wizard, Stock# 4XF5840, Serial# A101829.

The only numbers on the motor itself are a stamped number 10 right under the cooling fins on one side of engine and a stamped A-28 on the inside of engine near bottom of piston.

In an old B&S Service manual, with many engines, I found the picture and illustration of my engine that matches. The Cylinder Head illustration with head caps screw tightening sequence matches my machine perfectly. The book identifies it as a Model 6,N, with Bore and Stroke of 2.00 inches and Displacement of 6.3 Cu. Inches with an L head. The middle part of the motor is Cast Iron, while the head and pans are aluminum.

Based on the chart that explains the numerical model designation system for B&S engines, It appears that the Western Auto Supply, Wizard, Stock# 4XF5840 could also be the engine model number with one exception. The chart says the first number (4) is the Cubic Inch Displacement which does not agree with the 6.3 of the manual. All the other numbers: (X) (F) (5) (8) (4) (0) seem to agree with the Chart.

On the internet, I found that this engine is pretty old is a one and one half horse power engine with Type N Magneto and Type K Carb, Flo-Jet 2 Piece NS68.

Based on the above information, can anyone give me a modern Model, Type and Code Number for this engine so I can order parts or tell me where I can get parts to overhaul this prize of mine.

Thank you so much
